Rallies and Hinders

RULES

SITUATION

CORRECT RULING

3.13 RalliesPlayer switches hands to hit ball
Player loses rally.
Player hits ball with racquet handle but ball makes it to the front wall
Player loses rally.
A ball hits the front wall and back wall on fly, then bounces in mid court and comes off the front wall. Can it be played or is it a dead ball?
The ball has not touched the floor twice so it can be played off the front wall after bouncing on the floor only once.
Player swings and misses the ball
Player can continue till ball bounces twice.
Player can check for broken ball by hitting it with his racquet
No, only valid way to check is squeezing the ball by hand. If ball is broken by a hit, it works to disadvantage of the player hitting the ball.
3.14 Replay Hinders
Dead-Ball Hinder is renamed Replay Hinder!

Rally ending shot hits wet spot to or from front wall
Referee’s decision – did wet spot affect rally? If yes, replay. If no, shot is good.
Player hits opponent with ball that did not have velocity/direction to hit front wall
Player loses rally.
Incidental body contact is always a hinder
No, offensive player should be given the chance to return ball (the call should be not made too quickly).
Opponent struck on swing follow-through is a Replay Hinder
No, usually not a hinder (only on backswing and in some cases backswing hinder could be a Penalty Hinder).
Ball that hits front wall and then passes between the legs of the player that hit the shot is an automatic screen
No, depends on court position of opponent (hinder should not be called too quickly, so not to take an offensive shot away). It could be a Penalty if set up.
Player hits offensive shot near frontcourt that almost hits him on the rebound. What is the call?
Depends on Receiver’s position on court – Receiver is responsible for putting himself in position for the Screen, Replay or Penalty Hinder to be called.
3.15 Penalty Hinder
Avoidable Hinder is renamed Penalty Hinder!
Avoidable implies it could have been avoided. Name change indicates that intent, whether intentional or unintentional, is irrelevant.
Player moves or fails to move and allows opponent only straight shot to front wall
Penalty Hinder (Failure to Move) – player must also allow cross-court shot to opposite corner.
Player moves or fails to move, not giving opponent free swing
Penalty Hinder (Stroke Interference).
Player moves or fails to move, blocking opponent from getting to ball
Penalty Hinder (Blocking).
Player moves into opponent’s offensive shot and struckPenalty Hinder (Moving into the Ball).
 Player deliberately pushes opponent
Penalty Hinder (Pushing).
Player disrupts opponent’s concentration by shouting, waving racquet or stamping feet
Penalty Hinder (Intentional Distractions).
Player moves across offensive player’s line of vision as he prepares to strike ball
Penalty Hinder (View Obstruction).
 Player serves with wet ball
Referee’s decision – both players should ensure that ball is not wet. A noticeably wet ball not corrected by Server can result in Penalty Hinder if deemed intentional.
Apparel or equipment loss during the rally is an automatic Penalty Hinder
No. If opponent caused equipment loss, or, if offending player hits shot that could not be retrieved during equipment loss, it is not a Penalty Hinder.
