SITUATION 

CORRECT RULING 

3.16 Timeouts
Timeout is called by Receiver after Server’s service motion has begun
 Technical (Delay of Game).
 Timeout is called when no timeouts remain
Technical (Delay of Game).
 Player leaves court without calling timeout
Referee charges timeout (if none remain, Technical is called for Delay of Game).
 Player leaves court to get towel for wet spot or to remove debris on court
Referee’s decision but usually allowed (player should advise referee before leaving the court for any reason).
 Player has 15 minutes for each separate injury during match
No. Player is allowed 15 minutes total for all injuries during match.
 After 15 minutes of injury timeout, match is postponed till injured player is healthy
No. Injured player forfeits match.
 Muscle cramps, pulls and fatigue are valid injury timeouts
No. Injuries not caused by direct contact on the court are not considered for injury timeout purposes.
 Injury time is not allowed for pre-existing condition
Yes. But referee’s discretion if “i.e. knee brace” injury was re-aggravated during match. If contact made with opponent/wall/floor, then allow injury time.
 Referee can grant 2-minute timeout for equipment adjustments
Yes. If all timeouts used by player, referee may use equipment timeout (necessary for safe play rule).
 Player breaks string and has no timeouts left
Referee can grant equipment time out.
 Players are allowed 2 minutes rest between all games
No. 2 minutes are allowed between games 1/2. 5 minutes are allowed between game 2/tiebreaker.
